Analysis
"Lakshya" is a sports film based on archery. Although we have seen a lot of sports movies lately, this one about archery is a first. While archery is a novelty factor, the same cannot be said for the narrative. It's full of sports movie clichés from start to finish.
30 minutes into the film, we realize that new director Dheerendra Santhossh Jagarlapudi is handicapped by poor screenwriting skills. Scenes come and go without impact. Despite the problems, the first half of the film at least tried to tell the story of an archer's dreams being dashed by an incident. But the second half wanders aimlessly. The hero may have a 'lakshya' (goal) to achieve, but the screenplay works with confusion. The writer-director has no experience in writing effective screenplays. Bringing Jagapathi Babu's character out of nowhere and pushing the story on him and Naga Shaurya is another misjudgment.
The track between Naga Shaurya and Jagapati Babu does not evoke the required emotions. The climax part is good enough than the rest of the drama, but then we lose interest in it.
Even the so-called archery race sequences are pretty bland. Only the games change, not the drama in sports movies.
Naga Shaurya has achieved a great physique to portray this role. But what purpose does it serve in the story? The game does not require him to have a ripped body. If the transformation is to show that he is now a changed person, that's fine. But other than that, he didn't gain much value.
As an actor, Naga Shaurya has made sincere efforts. He is convincing in the role of an archer. Ketika Sharma doesn't have much to do. Sachin Khedekar and Jagapathi Babu have played their roles in the usual style.
The film has rich production values and production design.
Final Verdict
'Lakshya' generally does not hit the bull's eye. A sports drama about archery meanders aimlessly. So it never hits the target. Naga Shauryan's efforts and producer's good money were wasted due to the amateur skills of the new director.
